Next month, February 2022, Scotland will become the first place in the UK to legally require interlinked smoke alarms in both residential and commercial properties. What is the new fire safety law in Scotland?

Simply put, all homes must have an interlinked fire alarm system installed throughout the home by February 2022. This means if you're a homeowner or landlord, you are responsible for making sure your home meets the new fire alarms standard immediately.


What is an interlinked fire alarm system?

An interlinked fire alarm system simply means that if one fire alarm in your home goes off, all other alarms in your home or building will also go off. This can significantly reduce the risk of a potential fire spreading throughout your home by alerting every individual in the home or building that smoke has been detected. For instance, if you're upstairs sleeping in your bedroom, the alarm in your bedroom will ring if a possible fire has been detected in your kitchen on the other side of the house. As you can imagine, this can be extremely helpful in fire prevention.


How do I install an interlinked fire alarm system?

There are many ways to purchase and install an interlinked fire alarm system in your home. While you can certainly do-it-yourself, Abbey Services recommends hiring a professional that will not only install it correctly, but also make sure the alarms fitted are compliant. According to mygov.scot, the following is required in every home:

  • 1 smoke alarm in the room you spend most of the day, usually your living room

  • 1 smoke alarm in every circulation space on each storey, such as hallways and landings

  • 1 heat alarm in the kitchen

It is important to note that alarms should be mounted on the ceiling and interlinked. Also, if you have a carbon-fuelled appliance, like a boiler, non-electric heater or flue, ou must also have a carbon monoxide detector.
